Imagine taking up a sport where your recently retired father is one of the most spectacular, naturally gifted, iconic players to ever play the game. Imagine being drafted to play for the very same team that he played over 240 games for. Most in that situation are never able to step away from that enormous shadow, consumed by pressure and expectation. Gary Ablett Jr was not your average son of a champion. He was able to develop into a superstar in his own right. A dangerous player all over the field, pin point in the middle, and deadly up forward. He was able to become one of the standout players of the early part of the 21st century, and is recognized as one of the greatest players of all time. Unlike his father, Ablett Jr was able to claim not one Brownlow and Premiership, but two each. My drawing captures “The Little Master” celebrating another goal for the Cats, in his second stint at Geelong, and sits alongside a list of his career highlights.
